Disappearing Dream

April 2015

Disappearing Dream is a body of work produced by Commercial photographer Matthew Vasilescu. After moving into the Shire in Sydney’s south, he began to breathe it’s geography, it’s Architecture, its light, and mythology as if the Shire had become part of him, it was in his blood. It wasn’t long before, like a pilgrim seeker The Shire as it’s affectionately known started to show Matthew it’s secrets, the gems that would become the “Disappearing Dream”.

Stalking houses, as his wife called it, became Matthew’s obsession, searching for the mid-century delights that were often on the most wanted and extinction lists at the same time. Each with a personality that acted as an external reflection of those who resided inside them, with the houses disappearance, so departed a social era of folk of the Shire. This is an exploration into not only how that Architecture is disappearing but also how the quintessential Aussie dream of a block of land with a house and a hills hoist on it is disappearing too. With the advent of living in more populated areas, in smaller spaces and paying more to do so, an element of Australian life passes into history being replaced with multi level, multi room multi million dollar interpretations of a new dream.

Matthew Vasilescu’s background of commercial photography, often with not for profit organisations, has enabled him to see the beauty and value in the things we take for granted, things we assume will always be part of out geographical and cultural landscape, his eye and interpretation of each scene in Disappearing Dream opens the narrative for the viewer to recall the history of the house and it’s occupants both past and present.
